Music has the power to touch the heart and express that which cannot be said in words. Sound is an extremely powerful tool for healing, personal growth, and spiritual transformation. For centuries, sound has been used successfully to induce states of physical, mental, and emotional relaxation.
We are rhythmic creatures. Inasmuch as all matter is vibrating, our bodies are a series of overlapping rhythmic patterns: heartbeat, pulse, brainwave activity, electrical currents from our muscles, etc.
Human beings have been using sound to access deeper states of consciousness, expanded awareness and heal the body for thousands of years. Chanting, toning, Tibetan signing bowls, Chinese meditation gongs and the use of mantras are just a few examples.
Sound, in the form of chant, tone, music, and nature sounds is being re-discovered in the healthcare arena for the enhancement of health, vitality, hospice/palliative care, numerous psychological and behavioral conditions, and stress reduction.
Research projects in major universities across the country have explored the neurophysiology of meditation, deep relaxation states and mind/body interactions during healing. In one study a simple meditation technique used for 20 minutes a day caused profound changes in blood pressure, stress handling ability, immune response and feelings of well being. Using this healing music as a daily tool for mind/body integration and stress reduction can have many positive benefits.
Music is also a powerful therapeutic intervention for many of the physiological symptoms of the dying such as alleviating pain, reducing anxiety and nausea and inducing deep relaxation and sleep.
